Baptistry of S. Maria Maggiore "La Rotonda"

The church was founded in the second half of the 6th century, probably as the cathedral for the diocese of Nocera. Its round shape is based on the Byzantine churches inspired by Justinian. The double row of columns support an impressive dome, covering an ambulatory where there is a large basin used as the baptismal font, which is also surrounded by columns. The church was built over remains of older houses dating from the first centuries of the Christian era, mosaic floors from which have recently been retrieved and put on display in the ambulatory. The columns in the main circuit and the double row in the apse were all readapted from previous Roman contexts. To the left of the entrance inside there is a medieval chapel with remains of frescoes dating from the 14th or 15th century.
